14:30-15:30: Turlough Hydrology – Guided Walk with Dr. Tiernan Henry
Tiernan Henry has worked in and around and with water for the best part of 30 years. A graduate of TCD, he completed his MSc in Madison, WI in the USA and his PhD in Galway. As a hydrogeologist his teaching and research is focused on the relationships between water and the ground: exploring how water changes and is changed by the ground, and how the ground changes and is changed by the water. He’s currently working on research projects on peatlands in Co. Sligo, secret turloughs near Slieve Elva in Co. Clare, deep-seated karst structures in Irish limestones, and Ireland’s geothermal potential. Over the course of three decades he has managed to get soaked in as many ways as is possible: hail, rain, snow. He’s fallen into rivers, fallen over in rivers, he’s gotten soaked in quarries, on mountains, bogs and in caves. He’s been soaked in mines, on drill sites and on beaches. Hopefully you won’t get wet on his walk!
